Come Visit Eugowra
Eugowra was the scene of Australia's biggest bushranger robbery, when the Gold Escort on the way to Bathurst, was held up and stole of roughly 14 thousand pounds. That was in 1862. In the present day's money, it is equivalent to about 8,000,000 bucks. Eugowra sat in the center of the bushranger country, which in the 1860's, was trailblazing sheep and wheat farming country.
Today, there is nothing special about Eugowra. It was and still is a knackered little city in the middle of some prime sheep and wheat country and like many Australian rustic cities, it is in a state of decline. It is worth visiting though, to get a feel for the country that spawned lots of the bushrangers in the 1860's, but in addition to come to the site of the theft.
While there were a lot of massive sheep stations in the area, there were also many tiny holders or 'cockatoo farmers ' making an attempt to scratch a living against some pretty steep odds. Many bushrangers weren't in the profession by choice, but were regularly goaded by an antagonistic constabulary, into committing acts which under normal circumstances, they would not have done. Eugowra has a small museum which homes much colonial souvenirs, including the pistol employed by Johnny Gilbert during the Eugowra Gold Escort Theft. This now famous event was masterminded by the notorious Frank Gardiner, who was consistently harassed by Police at the time. Other members of his gang were also treated in a like demeanour, while a couple of them were indeed, villains.
Descendants of the original Eugowra settlers are still there and are happy with their heritage and are happy to chat. So drop in and visit and become familia with part of Australia's heritage that was certainly not pretty or quaint, but rivetingly interesting. Stop off at the Grand Hotel, still the hub of the city and chat with the neighbors.
