Texas vacations Port Aransas, also known as 'Port A', is well worth a look when choosing your next vacation destination. A beautiful island in the Gulf of Mexico, it is connected with the mainland through a free ferry system. It has a rich and interesting history. Its earliest known inhabitants were the nomadic Karankawa Indians. In the early 1500's the Spanish explored the area. In the 1700's the area was explored by the French.

Much legend and lore surrounds the stories of pirates that frequented the area in the early 19th century. Pirate Jean Lafitte spent much time along the coast and one of his favorite spots was nearby Mustang Island. There are many legends that Mustang Island was a favorite spot for hiding pirate booty. There is also lore of buried treasure in Port Aransas.

Today the island is a beach, fishing and resort destination. Its population can swell to over 60,000 in the summer. About 50 minutes away is the Corpus Christi International Airport, so it's easily accessible to those near and far. Miles of white, sandy beaches and activities such as swimming, boating, and surfing are popular past times here. It is well-known as a family oriented beach town.

With over 500 species of birds, the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center is another popular attraction. Often described as the number one boardwalk in Texas, the Center has a raised boardwalk that is wheelchair accessible. Surrounded by cattails, the walk includes an elevated observation deck ideal for bird watching. Specialty flowers are also planted along the boardwalk to attract butterflies and humming birds.

Hiking and biking trails can be found at the recently constructed Port Aransas Nature Preserve. Other amenities can be found there as well, such as an overlook of wetlands surrounding Salt Island, seating areas, boardwalks, and a pavilion. The island also boasts shopping for one and all, and many drinking and dining establishments with a historic atmosphere full of seaside charm. Boats can be chartered for private excursions, and there are regular boating excursions to various points of interest as well. The University of Texas Marine Science Institute is also on the island.

The climate is subtropical and humid. The average high temperature in January is 66 degrees Fahrenheit, and in July is 93 degrees Fahrenheit. The average lows in January are 46 degrees Fahrenheit and 74 degrees Fahrenheit in July. With an annual rainfall averaging 32 inches, the landscape is spectacular.

There are lodging accommodations for one and all. RV parks, camping facilities, charming cottages, hotels, luxury condos, and beach houses are all available. There are many activities for the entire family to enjoy. When choosing Texas vacations, Port Aransas is at the top of the list.
