Finding The Cheapest Flights From Durban To Johannesburg, SA Cheapest Flights Generally

by Morton Meintjes

A good starting point in finding the cheapest flights from Durban to Johannesburg, and SA cheapest flights, is to refer to the agencies or airlines advertising, in general, the discounted flights. More specials are found on the busier routes from Johannesburg, namely to Durban and Cape Town, so more special fares are available there from time to time.

The competition on these routes is healthy, and of about 26 airlines operating in South Africa, perhaps eight of them stand out as being better known. These are the international carriers South African Airways and British Airways; then there is also Airlink and South African Express. These occasionally offer special prices.

Best known are Mango, 1time, and Kulula Air for budget prices accompanied by basic hospitality and comforts without frills. Velvet Sky is a fairly new arrival with an inaugural flight out of Durban on March 22, 2011. Currently, they seem to have one way fares ranging from R300 to R400.

These fares can be compared with the July sale of Kulula who were quoting R199 excluding airport tax, while 1time were actually cheaper at, R219 including tax. Mango had a clear win at the time, however, by quoting R191 including tax. This clearly shows how important it is to check whether fares include tax or not.

In fact, many prices on special recently advertised are below R300. Such low costs certainly seem to make it better to travel the 297 miles as the crow flies to Johannesburg by air rather than venturing the 352 mile road distance by car, and certainly not in a hired one. Even the sometimes striking scenery hardly compensates.

Just the petrol is certain to cost in excess of the fare unless four or five persons share the vehicle. It does not make much sense for a single person, and even more so when one takes into account the toll fees of R164.

In doing the math, though, one also needs to remember that the International Airport named for King Shaka is some 18 to 24 miles north of Durban, and over double the distance of the old one to the south. The road does tend to become congested, and it is a good idea to make a generous time allowance. A R4 toll is charged when driving out again, but not on arrival.

The 14 mile distance out of Johannesburg of the OR Tambo International Airport may also add to expense, unless one stays at one of the establishments running a free shuttle or books in at one of the hotels within walking distance of the airport. However all these extra costs will be absorbed easily by savings if one has achieved the cheapest flight.
