Planning For A Safer Holiday

by Harry Barber

It is an unforgettable experience to travel to different countries and experience new cultures and traditions. You can visit the sights the country is famous for and you'll also be given the opportunity to see the beauty of a new country. But safety should be your first priority when you travel abroad.

Planning ahead will help you to prepare for any eventuality, and make sure you have a safe and enjoyable holiday. The first point to consider is your transport arrangements. Airports, train and bus stations are known to be popular with pickpockets, offering them easy prey in the form of travellers who are looking for the right platform or bus stop, and not concentrating on their belongings.

Important documents like tickets and passports should be kept in a belt back or pouch around your neck. Keep money out of sight and safely secured as well. Lock and mark clearly your luggage and also make sure it's good quality. Don't leave your luggage out of sight and keep it with you at all times.

When you arrive at your destination, check at information or with a security or police officer at the airport which taxis are safe to use. Do not share a taxi with a stranger, and try to avoid using public transport late at night. Hitchhiking is another thing you need to avoid.

Take not of the locations of the emergency exits and read the evacuation instructions when you check into your hotel. Properly lock the door of your room and don't let strangers in. Even if the people you just met seem friendly, you still shouldn't invite them to your room.

You can choose items that will help you blend with the locals when you are packing for your holiday. The more you stand out, the more like a tourist - and an easy target - you will appear. Keep cameras and other gadgets out of sight or attached to your body and don't bring your expensive jewelry with you.

Using your credit card most of the time is a good time when you travel locally. Pickpockets and thieves will target you if you use cash. It would be preferable to use travelers' checks and credit cards when you travel internationally but for tips and taxi fares, you may need small sums of cash. When using your credit card, make sure you can see the card being swiped - credit card fraud is rife around the world. If you stay alert and are aware that there are criminals who specifically seek out tourists, you will have an enjoyable holiday that will be safe as well.
