Diabetics have more control over their condition than they may realize. The diabetic diet is a strategy that takes the condition into account. Eating too much of the wrong foods can make the condition worse. Your doctor will help you know what foods you should eat. You'll still have a wide variety of foods you can enjoy with diabetes so your diet won't become boring and bland. Use the following tips to help you adjust to the diabetic diet.

For those of you that do not know about the ABC component of the diabetic diet, read on. What you need to accomplish are healthy levels of blood chemistry and cardiovascular functions. The A factor refers to the hemoglobin A1c test, and that test measures the three month average of your blood sugar. Referenced by the B component, your blood pressure is also measured. Cholesterol levels, specifically the HDL and LDL levels, are measured by the C component. Everything will be normal if this test shows that all three factors are in the green.

You should start reading the food labels on all your food. You have to start paying attention to sugar and carbohydrate amounts in everything you buy. You will need to limit the amount of carbohydrates you consume every day. So, for example, if you eat something sweet like cake or a dessert, then subtract those carbohydrates (the sugars) from somewhere else. This is called carbohydrate substitutions and is important to know about.

In regard to diabetes, you should take special consideration of artificial sweeteners. Your daily diet will not be influenced by additional carbohydrates when using these sugar substitutes. Using artificial sweeteners is in no way a guarantee that additional carbohydrates will be included in your meals. So as always, just be sure to default to the important habit and practice of reading food labels for everything you consume. Another consideration is to check the table for glycemic indexes in regard to artificial sweeteners. You want to pay particular attention to the gram amount of carbohydrates per serving.

The diabetic diet has many important aspects to it. While none of it is difficult to learn, you can get help from your doctor. You can enjoy some freedom in your meals by following the above strategy. But it's important to talk to your doctor about carbohydrate substitution. You need to make sure it's safe for you to do this because there can be exceptions to the rule.
