Should You Wear A Helmet This Summer?

by Charles Saragossa

Hey! It's summer time and the weather is clear and beautiful. Those roads are just begging to be ridden, and you've got a monster in your garage, just waiting to eat some pavement. You're all over it; you're a motorcycle maniac. But are you the kind of maniac that goes riding without a helmet?

Ladies and gentlmen, settle down! It's clear the helmet laws are a topic best left for late night discussions among best friends. Talking to strangers at biking rallies about helmet laws is like talking to someone from another state about your political reviews. It is a topic that has a clear line dividing the popular thought.

Before you decide to go riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet, you should make yourself familiar with the laws of your state. There are a number of states that require riders of either 18, 19, or 21 or below to wear helmets when riding. Other states require the rider to always wear a helmet, regarless of age! There are just 2 states that do not have any helmet restriction for anyone of any age.

Oh, how lucky you are, helmet shopper. There is, of course, any number of helmets to buy near where you live. But beyond that, there are some amazing deals of helmets for sale online. There are DOT approved helmets you can buy for less than $25. So really, price and availability should not be the thing that stops you from wearing protection while riding.

Motorcycle Helmets come in a few different styles. There's the open face helmet for the rider that wants protection in the event they crash, but with nothing blocking their face so they can enjoy the sensation of speed and wind and sunlight. Then there is the full face, which has face protection, and is much safer, but limits a lot of your vision and the fresh air sensation when riding. Lastly, there's a combination of both called a Flip Face helmet, where the front of the helmet is flipped up over the top of the head, so you can choose between full face or open face as you see fit.

All arguing aside, this is a very personal decision. Assuming you don't live in a state that makes you wear a helmet, do you wear one? And if you do wear a helmet, which kind? Maybe you love comfort, or maybe you are most attracted to safety. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but at the end of the day, it's all up to the rider. Live free and ride, or Live to ride another day. That about sums up the decision.
