Why Not Go To Camp?

by James Lorenz

Do I send My kid to Teen Camps? This is a non-question for folks who went to camp as a Teenager. Most only have positive thoughts and cherished memories of a time gone by.

Values is what camp is all about. Giving kids the chance to spread their wings with out parent intervention. Oh sure they have supervision but its more like a big brother or sister rather than your parents. Camp is so much more than childcare. It's a place and time for kids to gain independence, enhance their skills, make new friends and above all have fun.

Daily fun is what camp says to child but to parents its so much more. A well-run summer camp can teach children all about life skills, Compassion, patience, understanding, persistence and so much more. Summer camp offers much more to a child's life.

Today with child obesity hitting all time highs it is good to know that physical exercise is a part of everyday life at summer camp. Camp also exercises the camper's intellect and imagination as well. Summer camp offers a wonderful template for kids to learn the skills of social interaction in a more creative way. Guided by capable adult friends and role models called counselors, campers get an independent chance to apply what they have been taught at home in a larger world.

Campers discover their own capacities and grow into them, setting newer and higher standards for their own behavior themselves. The camp context encourages perseverance, listening skills, teamwork, recognizing similarities and appreciating differences. A pattern of self discovery that that is uniquely nurtured and developed at camp becomes a lifelong habit.

Jeff and Lonnie Lorenz, directors of Wisconsin's Swift Nature Camp for over a decade, see summer camp as a fresh opportunity for self perception: "Summer camp is an opportunity for each child to come to a new place and try new things and make new friends. Everyone starts on equal footing with a chance to just be oneself. Summer camp is a new beginning, and that's a good thing."
